This piece is rendered from a photo I captured at our local zoo; I have always been grateful for our zoo's conservation programs which are saving endangered species and allowing everyone to be close to these animals. In mythology, a "water horse" refers to a kelpie, a shape-shifting spirit that appears as a horse in water. It's also used as a general term for other aquatic horse-like creatures, like the hippocampus in Greek mythology.
