Always look up
This drawing depicts the endangered Zanzibar red colobus monkey (Piliocolobus kirkii), a species found only on the island of Zanzibar. I encountered this unique primate during a visit to the Jozani Forest, where I had the rare opportunity to observe and photograph it in its natural habitat. That moment left a deep impression on me — a mix of awe, gratitude, and urgency to help protect such fragile wildlife.

Using soft pastels and pastel pencils, I aimed to capture not only the striking appearance of the red colobus but also the emotional weight of that memory. The expressive eyes, dynamic posture, and richly layered fur were all rendered with great care to reflect both the beauty and vulnerability of this species.

This piece is a tribute to an unforgettable experience and a call to value what is rare and irreplaceable.
